Topical Sprays

These products are fiber and fabric protectors that are applied to give a fiber and fabric protection from stains and soils.

There are two basic categories of fiber and fabric protectors.
  • Stain Retardants
  • Soil Retardants

Stain Retardants(Protect the carpet from dry soil and chemical soils)
These give a fiber or fabric better resistance from liquid spills.

Soil Retardants(Protect the carpet from dry soil)
These give a fiber or fabric better resistance from particular soils. These protectors may or may not protect against water or oil based liquids so they must not be confused with stain.

Fluorochemicals provides fibers and fabrics the most protection against both soils and stains

Fluorochemicals(Scotchguard Teflon)
are the most common and best known of all the fiber and fabric protectors. These products can be either solvent or water based and when applied to a fiber or fabric will give it the the ability to repel dry soils as well as water and oil based spills.

Fluorochemicals have an excellent resistance to detergent and will withstand several hot water extractions. Foot traffic will abrade these coatings off the fibers, so they will have to be reapplied on a regular basis. Solvents will remove fluorochemicals from the fiber.

Most of the built-in or mill applied fiber protectors are fluorochemicals.

Carpets protected with flurochemical based protector will stay cleaner longer and clean easier. These products coat and protect the fiber from becoming soiled and stained by daily wear and spills.

Topical Sprays: Procedure

For best results, apply following extraction cleaning on damp carpets.

2)

Mix solution following manufacturer's directions.

3)

Apply solution to carpet. Spray carpet in 2 different directions.

4)

Groom carpet to work protector into the pile

5)

Allow to dry before use.

Fifth Generation Stain Resistant Carpets
The introduction of "stain resist" technology to carpets has presented unique challenges. Care must be taken both in the method and chemicals used to ensure proper cleaning and prevent voiding the manufacturer's warranty.

Approved Cleaning Method:
Extraction is recommended. Rotary equipment may not be recommended for some carpets because of possible fiber distortion.

Cleaning Chemical Criteria:

pH: The pH of the cleaning product must be lower than 10

Polarity: Non-ionic(no-charge), anionic(-negative charge) is acceptable if formulated properly

Products must not be cationic (+positive charge) such as bactericide, bolides, fungicides, fabric softeners, or quarternary ammonium chloride compounds (quats)

Tip:
For cleaning Advanced 5th Generation carpets use only approved chemicals. Carpet spots that are difficult to remove may require stronger spotting agent. This may remove some of the stain resistant properties.
