Surface Active Agents
Called Surfactants. This property lowers the surface tension of the liquid, allowing it to come into close contact with, and spread evenly over, the surface to be cleaned.
Wetting Agents
This property allows the solution to come into close contact with both the soil and the surface below the soil. They also increase the solutions' ability to penetrate and remove the soil.

Emulsifiers
This is the property that allows one liquid to suspend the droplets of another liquid without dissolving them, such as soap, emulsifying finely divided oily liquids.
Dispensants
This property no only includes emulsification but also the power to dissolve certain liquids and soils, and hold them insuspension in readiness for rinsing or flushing away.
Soaps and detergents are also similar by reason of the fact that they are both water-loving and water-hating at the same time. This is possible because the molecules of soaps and detergents possess both:

| Groups that are soluble in water. |
Chains that are insoluble in water |
This means that soaps or detergents have a particular liking for water in one section of the compound and a great dislike for water (or a love of other matter, such as soil or oily deposits). In the other section.
These hydrophillic and hydrophobic qualities make it possible for soaps and detergents to remove soil and clean surfaces by using water.
When mixed into a solution (with water), detergents/soaps split apart into positively and negatively charged particles, called ions. The solution is now ionized. Detergents are classified into four groups, and take their name
from the charge of the large active ion. These groups are:
- Anionic Detergents; where the charge is negative.
- Cationic Detergents; where the charge is positive.
- Nonionic Detergents; where there is no charge present.
- Amphoteric; these detergents can act either as anionic or cationic detergents depending upon the PH of the solution.
