The carpet industry in the United States, traversed a colorful journey from 1791 to the present. It has endured wars, recession, political upheavals, displacement and onslaught of trends that have changed the way homes are floored nowadays. Yet, despite of all transformations, the carpet remains an important accessory to interior decoration. It has, in fact, metamorphosed from the simplest to the most complex of designs. From Asia, to the United States, and in many countries in between, the carpet has pronounced distinction, as if, the most important of events, would never be complete without a carpet to walk on.

In the United States, the carpet industry first saw the light of dawn when William Sprague constructed his revolutionary weaving mill at Philadelphia in 1791. Very soon after that, a bustling economy surfaced among carpet millers and weavers.
It was Erastus Bigelow, however, who opened the frontiers of the carpet industry to the rest of the world when he invented the power loom for weaving carpets. Production of carpet was tripled by Bigelow's invention, which is now part of Smithsonian Institution's collections. Throughout his lifetime, Bigelow authored 35 patents, all dedicated to the only industry he loved so dearly, which later became an indispensable accessory in every American household.
